Your Visit

First Orthodontic Visit by
Age 7

Dentists advise the first dental visit by age 1.  Orthodontists recommend the first orthodontic visit by age 7

The first visit is about education and getting comfortable

Dentists will count the baby teeth (there are usually a couple by age 1) and review how to brush your little one.  Parents and the child can become familiar with the team and the dental setting.

Similarly at Kindred Orthodontics, we want to see your child by age 7 so we can count the teeth (baby teeth and adult teeth) and review the child’s orthodontic status.

  • Is there sufficient space for the adult teeth?

  • Will the child benefit from early treatment?

  • When is treatment recommended?

  • What will treatment involve (appliance, duration, cost)?

  • What if we wait until the teenage years?

Dr. C will take time to answer all these questions and any other queries you may have.

Early Treatment for Children

During the stage when children have both primary (baby) teeth and adult teeth, there are scenarios which Dr. C would recommend interceptive treatment.  This usually involves treatment of a short duration (6-12 months) with specific goals to address specific issues.

  • Severe overbite

  • Underbite

  • Openbite

  • Severe crowding

  • Habits

  • Constricted palate

  • Asymmetries

The reason to do something early rather than wait too long, is that waiting until the teenage years can result in more complex (time and cost) treatment later.

Dr. C does not recommend early treatment for every child.  We love seeing normally developing teeth and jaws so our visits become opportunities to chat.

Teens & Adults:
Clear Aligners and Braces

For teens and adults, we have quality appliances delivered by skilled hands.

  • Metal or clear braces are options for many cases.

  • Clear aligners are also an option for patients committed to full-time aligner wear.

Your First Visit at Kindred

1. You share any concerns you have about your smile and we will listen.

2. We take photographs and review your panoramic x-ray (which we take in-office or get from your family dentist).

3. Dr. C will describe your orthodontic status and review areas of concern.  She will review options for treatment to address any concerns.

4. You will decide the next step for your smile.

We Give Options

We can usually offer more than one treatment option to suit your needs.  For example, there may be more than one choice for the type of appliance or timing to begin treatment.  No treatment is always an option too.

You Choose What Suits You

It’s your decision, and we’re happy to provide guidance to help you make the best choice for your needs.

If Dr. C recommends treatment and you want to proceed, we will guide you through the journey to get the smile you want.
