Frequently Asked Questions

On average, the ideal age for first visit is 7 years old. Some children may need to be seen earlier. If your child is older than 7, it’s not too late.
-
At the first orthodontic visit, after taking photographs and completing a clinical exam (taking a look in the mouth and at the face), we will be able to outline your child’s orthodontic status. For example, everything is as expected and no treatment is recommended at this time. Or, if we do spot some concerns, then we will inform you. Such as, your child has a narrow palate which will benefit from palatal expansion (now or later).
-
We follow the principle of ALARA (as low as reasonably allowable) by using a digital x-ray machine to take a very low dose panoramic radiograph to capture the complete picture and give you a thorough explanation of your orthodontic status. Then only if you are ready to start treatment will we take the necessary additional radiographs.
-
We will send you for a 3D xray if there is a clinical condition that warrants the need for this supplementary imaging (ie. tooth stuck in palate)

The very first time teeth move, you will feel something. This feeling differs for each person. It is commonly reported that “my mouth feels achy.” At subsequent visits, the discomfort will typically be less than the first visit. Our goal is to make your visits as comfortable as possible.

As a guideline, you will need to wear retainers at night time, every night, for as long as you want to maintain the alignment of your teeth. Retainer wear may need to be more (all day and all night) for a period immediately after appliances or braces are off.
